Roman, Medieval, and Islamic Civilizations Practice Test

The question is testing how one Roman general used civil war to seize control, push reform, and assume near-absolute authority before being killed. Julius Caesar fits all three parts. He fought and won the civil war against Pompey, which gave him unprecedented power in Rome. He then enacted reforms aimed at centralizing authority: reshaping the Senate, reorganizing provinces to place loyalists in key positions, and even introducing the Julian calendar. In 44 BCE he accepted the title dictator perpetuo (dictator for life), signaling a level of control never before reached by a Roman leader in the Republic. His accumulation of power sparked opposition among many senators, and he was assassinated on the Ides of March.

Augustus later became the first emperor, but he did not rule as dictator for life in the way Caesar did, instead stabilizing and transforming power within a new constitutional framework. Pompey was Caesar’s rival who lost the civil war and was killed in Egypt, not a dictator. Crassus died earlier and did not play a direct role in this civil war or its dictatorship.
